Sixth but beaten less than two lengths in a Group 2 at Ascot last time, this imposing colt may still have been on the up. He handles both soft and fast ground at 5-6f; the leading trainer-jockey combination have a strong record in this race, and he looks the one to beat.

Out of his depth over a longer trip at Epsom last time, beaten eight lengths on a stamina-testing track; back at 6f on a sound surface today he is firmly in his element. The trainer is in good form and he showed better ability before that defeat, but the class here still asks a question.

Third in a Group 3 here last time, finishing with real purpose under pressure despite the defeat, he appeared to have more to give. Bred for and effective at 6f on this ground, he goes well at this track; the one question is whether he can translate that obvious promise into a winning performance.

A $300,000 breeze-up purchase by the American sire Corniche, from a useful pedigree and with a top trainer's hand behind him — there is considerable interest here for a debut run. Fast ground should suit, and the market reaction will be informative, though debutants in this grade always face a stiff test.

Well beaten at Ascot last time in a Group 2, finishing over nine lengths adrift when the level of competition proved too strong — that run reflects the standard he is being measured against rather than his true level. His debut was unremarkable and while improvement is expected, this remains a tough assignment.
